When God Stiff-Arms A Pastor

God delights to show His favor. He longs to pour out His Spirit. He is a God of lavish grace. But if you want to see God remove His favor and hold back His Spirit and shut off the spigot, just introduce pride. I have a growing awareness of how much pride has been and is in my life. It’s been a constant companion for more than fifty years. I am well acquainted with the dark side of leadership.

Respect is a big deal to me. I am so blessed to have a wife who has always affirmed her respect for me. I can’t begin to tell you how life-giving that has been. Through the years as a pastor, the most consistent message I have given to wives is this…”Your husband can do without a lot of things, but the ONE thing he cannot do without is RESPECT.” It’s not just true in marriage, it is also true in leadership.

As we approach late October, various cultural traditions emerge in communities across the United States. Among them, Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) stands out, celebrated with vibrant colors, marigolds, and a deep reverence for those who have gone before us. It’s easy to see this Mexican holiday as just a cultural event, yet for believers, it points to something greater: remembering those who came before us, giving thanks for God’s faithfulness, and celebrating our shared life in Christ.

Including Kids In Small Groups Benefits The Whole Community

Before kids, life was simpler, but it was a lot less fun. After kids, things get crazy. Everything takes more time, and you wonder what you did before the little ones were around. Going places with your kids becomes an adventure. You pack up everything you’ll need and some things you won’t. You make sure everyone’s eaten and used the restroom, even though you know they’ll be hungry and have to go again when you get there.
