The Well At The Well

Summary: Living Water… Flowing water… Spring water make a good type for the Holy Spirit. As Moving water quenches thirst, refreshes and invigorates, purifies and makes the earth fruitful.

Samaria; Called Sychar (meaning drunken: from the drunkenness of its inhabitants (Isaiah 28:1, 3, 7-8); and anciently known as Shechem.
It was located at the foot of Munt Gerizim about 10 miles from Shiloh and 40 from Jerusalem and 52 miles from Jericho.
John 4:4 “And he (Jesus) must needs go through Samaria.”
Why?
For one: it was the main road of the day to travel from Galilee to Jerusalem.
For others: it was where Abram first stopped on his coming from Haran to Canaan.
It was where God first appeared to Abram and promised to give the land to his people.
It was where Abram first built an altar to the Lord and called upon His name. (Genesis 12:7)
Verse 10, Jesus offers her “Living Water”.
The Hebrews understood living water as flowing water; Spring water.
Living Water… Flowing water… Spring water make a good type for the Holy Spirit.
As Moving water quenches thirst, refreshes and invigorates, purifies and makes the earth fruitful.
John 7:38-39 “38- He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39- (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet [given]; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”
Jesus is (the present indicative of the word be; meaning “now”) the SOURCE!
The Eternal Spring.
Bubbling up with overflowing Grace for one and all!
The drink of natural water will leave you thirsting for more,
However Jesus, Savior can quench your thirst (for life, hope…) for ever!
She wanted that water. How about you?
In verse 16 Jesus started talking to her about her husband(s).
She had, had 5 husbands and the 1 she was with now was not her husband.
That made Jesus the 7th man in her life.
7 is God’s number of Sabbath… Rest!
Isaiah 28:11-12 “11- For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12- To whom he said, This [is] the rest [wherewith] ye may cause the weary to rest; and this [is] the refreshing:…”
Acts 2:1-4 “1- And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2- And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3- And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4- And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Acts 2:16-21 “16- But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17- And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18- And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19- And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20- The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21- And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
