Explore the supremacy of Christ over rituals and regulations, emphasizing the importance of a genuine relationship with God rather than adherence to human commands and teachings.

Introduction

Good morning, family! Today, we’re going to be diving into the book of Colossians, specifically chapter 2, verses 16-23. We'll be exploring three important themes: the supremacy of Christ, the futility of rituals, and the power of relationship.

A.W. Tozer once said, "The most important thing about a person is what they think about when they think about God." This statement will serve as our guidepost as we navigate through our discussion today.

Now, let's read Colossians 2:16-23 together:

[Read passage]

Let's pray. Heavenly Father, as we gather here today, open our hearts and minds to the message you have for us. Help us to understand more deeply the supremacy of Christ, the emptiness of rituals without relationship, and the transformative power of a relationship with You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Now, let's get into it...

The Supremacy of Christ

The supremacy of Christ is the idea that Christ is not just a part of our lives, but the very center of it. He is not just one among many, but He is preeminent, superior to all things. This is not a mere religious sentiment, but a reality that shapes our entire existence.

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Colossians: He emphasizes this truth by contrasting the supremacy of Christ with the emptiness of human traditions and regulations. He warns the Colossians not to let anyone judge them by what they eat or drink, or with regard to religious festivals, new moon celebrations, or Sabbath days. These things, Paul says, are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality is found in Christ.

Not just another figure in the religious landscape: He is not just another prophet or teacher. He is the reality that all the shadows point to. He is the fulfillment of all the prophecies, the embodiment of all the promises, and the realization of all the hopes of humanity. He is the one in whom all the fullness of God dwells, and through whom we have been reconciled to God.

A practical reality: It is not just something we believe, but something we experience. It is not just something we affirm with our lips, but something we live out in our lives. This is why Paul warns the Colossians not to be disqualified by anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels. Such people, Paul says, have lost connection with the head, which is Christ.

Living in connection with Him: It is about being part of His body, being nourished by Him, growing in Him, and being held together by Him. It is about experiencing His life, His love, His power, and His presence in our daily lives.

A communal reality: It is not just about our individual relationship with Christ, but about our collective identity as His body. It is about being part of a community that is centered on Christ, that is shaped by His values, that is guided by His Spirit, and that is committed to His mission.

Verse 19: This is why Paul says that the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. This means that the supremacy of Christ is not just about our personal growth, but about our corporate growth. It is about growing together as a community, growing in love, in unity, in maturity, and in mission.

It’s a reality that calls us to a life of faith, of love, of hope, and of mission.

Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about how you practice God being the center of your life and the struggles you face.
