Jesus is uniquely the Messianic King.

But Why is Jesus uniquely the Messianic King?

OR

What makes Jesus uniquely the Messianic King?

OR

How do we know that Jesus is uniquely the Messianic King?

Last time we were in Matthew Chapter 1, we looked at the fact that Jesus is uniquely the Messianic King by...

1. COVENANT(:1)

2. COVENANTAL CONTINUANCE(:2-16)

3. INCLUSION(:3, 5, 6, 16)

a.-Tamar(:3)

Today we’ll find that:

(3-part b)—Jesus is also uniquely the Messianic King by...

INCLUSION(:3, 5, 6, 16)...

That is, we will examine the inclusion of a woman by the name of RAHAB(:5a)

RAHAB(:5a):

:5—“Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,”

“Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab”—

As with Judah & Perez(:3), so “Salmon” & “Boaz’ ” entry is different, in that “Boaz’ ” mother is also listed. Why mention Salmon’s wife at all? There are some ‘spirit-calming’ reasons why we should consider her inclusion.

This is the same “Rahab” from Jericho(Joshua 2:1ff.). She is the Gentile prostitute who aided the Hebrew spies because of her faith. She was therefore justified by the work of her faith(Js. 2:25 & Heb. 11:31).

Josh. 2:1-8—“Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, & came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, & lodged there. And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country.” So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country.” Then the woman took the two men & hid them. So she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.” (But she had brought them up to the roof & hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.) Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate. Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof,”

Josh. 2:9-21—“& said to the men: “I know that the LORD has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, & that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, & what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon & Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above & on earth beneath. Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, & give me a true token, & spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, & all that they have, & deliver our lives from death.” So the men answered her, “Our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours. And it shall be, when the LORD has given us the land, that we will deal kindly & truly with you.” Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall; she dwelt on the wall. And she said to them, “Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way.” So the men said to her: “We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, “unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, & unless you bring your father, your mother, your brothers, & all your father’s household to your own home. So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, & we will be guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. And if you tell this business of ours, then we will be free from your oath which you made us swear.” Then she said, “According to your words, so be it.” And she sent them away, & they departed. And she bound the scarlet cord in the window.”

& at the destruction of Jericho:

Josh. 6:17, 22-23—“Now the city shall be doomed by the LORD to destruction, it & all who are in it. Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she & all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.”.....“But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, “Go into the harlot’s house, & from there bring out the woman & all that she has, as you swore to her.” And the young men who had been spies went in & brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, & all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives & left them outside the camp of Israel.”

There is also specific New Testament commentary on the significance of Rahab’s faith:

Js. 2:22, 25—“Do you see that faith was working together with his[Abraham’s] works, & by works faith was made perfect?”.....“Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers & sent them out another way?”

Heb. 11:31—“By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe[the inhabitants of Jericho], when she had received the spies with peace.”

Rahab’s faith is a picture of Old Testament saving faith. It was based on the ‘promised’ future arrival & work of the unique & singular Messiah & Savior. Prior to Jesus’ arrival & prior to the compilation of the historical resources of the New Testament, the ‘Anointed One’ was unknown to the world by name. At that time He was known only by His titles, & by descriptions of His obedience, destiny, character, & work. And those descriptions would make the identification of the promised appeasement/propitiation for sin(cf.-Isa. 53:), obvious to anyone upon His physical arrival!

Mk. 8:27-29—“Now Jesus & His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; & on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?” So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; & others, one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered & said to Him, “You are the Christ.”

Note here that ‘faith’ is what makes a person different from other people!

Jn. 9:30-33—“The man[healed of blindness] answered & said to them[Pharisees], “Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God & does His will, He hears him. Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

Jn. 7:25-31—“Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill? But look! He speaks boldly, & they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ? However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, & you know where I am from; & I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, & He sent Me.” Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. And many of the people believed in Him, & said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?””

Whenever a person is saved by faith in Christ Jesus, that person does not ‘know’ or experience everything that is in store for them in their walk with God. People will indeed ‘stumble’ in their walk with Christ. But if they are sincere in their faith toward Him, If they are a person ‘after God’s own heart’, then they will earnestly seek to KNOW Him, to know OF Him, & to know continual personal SURRENDER in service TO Him!

The saving event of the person’s initial commitment to Christ(their trust in Him) is only a PRECURSOR to the continuing fulfillment of saving commitment.

*Salmon married this Gentile (?former?)harlot(Rahab). And by Rahab’s entering the genealogical timeline, Jesus of Nazareth is enabled to take His rightfully ‘legal’ place as the Messiah & Savior of God’s people Israel, & thus of all mankind!

Remember the Messiah was eventually produced thru such sinful situations as you yourself may have been involved with!...

*Don’t ever think that God cannot use you to honor Him! To do so simply requires your faithfulness towards Him!...Which you can begin to do today!

Argumentation:

Jn. 16:33—Jesus said,—“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Rom. 4:25-5:6—The apostle Paul writes that Jesus is the One—“who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; & perseverance, character; & character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Ephesians 2:13-18—“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, & has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, & that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. And He came & preached peace to you who were afar off & to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.”

Illustration:

Rahab’s faith was DECISIVE—She was powerless against death by the hand of God thru Israel.

Rahab’s faith was BOLD—She aided the Israelite spies, despite a threat of punishment.

Rahab’s faith was BELIEVABLE—She convinced all whom she loved of God’s truth.

Rahab’s faith was EVANGELICAL—She shared God’s truth with others.

Rahab’s faith was TRUSTING—She trusted God’s will over & above that of others.

Rahab’s faith was OVERCOMING—She & her family were delivered from the onslaught.

Application:

?Does Jesus’(the Messianic King) INCLUSION compel YOU to give Him precedence, priority, & thus glory in YOUR life?

?Why? ?Why not?

?Is Jesus the true Messianic King?

CONCLUSION:

Visualization:

Remember Coach Jenkins’ disappointment!...Don’t set yourself for the same...Trust Jesus!

Your friendship with God thru Christ Jesus can make you, & thus Jesus Himself, quite certainly recognizable to the lost!
