Old Life – New Life Pt 1

August 11, 2013 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: If we are truly born again, then our new life should exhibit who we are in Christ Jesus!

Focus Passage: Romans 6:1-7

Supplemental Passage: Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. (2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB)

Introduction: There is a bizarre fascination with Zombies today in our American culture. The Zombie, as Hollywood describes it, is a completely fictitious creature. However, I propose to you that zombies exists! Not like you might think, but most likely like you DON’T think! The Bible says that we have an “old self” that has been put to death if we are in Jesus Christ. But for many of us, myself included, it’s as if the old self simply didn’t get the memo that it’s dead and it tries to come back alive not really knowing it’s dead! So, in a way, our daily task is to be zombie killers; that is, to put our old self to death death each day, or as the Bible puts it, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24 NASB)

I. Dead to Sin

a. Who holds the strength to break the power of canceled sin?

b. If someone or something is dead, it has no power, no feelings, no actions

II. Baptized into Christ’s Death

a. Jesus Christ was raised from the dead

b. We, too, are raised from the death of sin

III. Alive in Christ Jesus

a. We are no longer slaves to sin

b. We are free in Jesus Christ

Invitation: Is your new life in Christ a “whole new life” or is it too reminiscent of your old life before Christ? If you are truly saved, your new life will show it. Are you still a slave to sin? If you are saved, you are no longer a slave to sin, but have been freed by Jesus! Live like it!
