This sermon explores our identity as God's adopted children, the implications for our relationships within the church, and the blessings of this spiritual adoption.

Introduction

Good morning! I greet you with the warmth of Christ's love and the joy that comes from gathering together in His name. We are not merely a congregation, not just a random collection of believers. We are a family, bound by the blood of Christ, united by the Spirit of God, and adopted into the household of the Father.

It is in this spirit of familial connection that we turn our hearts and minds to the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatians. We find ourselves in the fourth chapter, verses four through seven. Allow me to read: "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, 'Abba, Father!' Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." (Galatians 4:4-7)

In these verses, we find a profound truth about our identity in Christ. We are not slaves, not outsiders, not strangers. We are sons and daughters of God, adopted into His family, and heirs of His kingdom. But what does it mean to be an heir of God's kingdom? How does this adoption shape our relationships within the congregation? And how can we live out the blessings of this spiritual adoption?

Becoming Beloved in God's Family

In the heart of the Apostle Paul's message to the Galatians, we find a profound truth. God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem us. This redemption is not merely a transaction, a simple exchange of our sin for His righteousness. It is a transformation, a complete change of our identity. We are no longer slaves, but sons and daughters of God. We are beloved in His family.

This transformation begins with the act of God sending His Son. God didn't wait for us to clean up our act, to get our lives together. He didn't wait for us to earn our way into His family. He sent His Son to us, to redeem us, to adopt us. It's a beautiful picture of God's grace, His unmerited favor towards us. We didn't deserve to be part of His family, but He made us part of His family anyway.

This continues with the indwelling of the Spirit of His Son in our hearts. The Spirit doesn't just reside in us, He cries out from within us, "Abba, Father!" This is a deeply personal, deeply intimate cry. It's the cry of a son or daughter who knows they are beloved, who knows they belong.

This sense of belonging is a reality that shapes our identity, our self-understanding. We are not defined by our past mistakes, our present circumstances, or our future fears. We are defined by our relationship with God, our status as His beloved children. This is who we are. This is what it means to be part of God's family.

Yet, this status as God's beloved children is also about our relationship with others. As members of God's family, we are called to love one another, to care for one another, to bear one another's burdens. We are called to live out the reality of our adoption, to reflect the love of our heavenly Father in our relationships with our spiritual siblings.

In this way, our adoption into God's family is both a privilege and a responsibility. It's a privilege because we get to be part of God's family, to enjoy His love, His grace, His blessings. It's a responsibility because we are called to represent His family, to reflect His love, His grace, His blessings to others.
