ECCLESIOLOGY:
THE DOCTRINE OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
1 Timothy 3:1-5; 5:1-6:2
Introduction:
1. Peter’s confession of Christ.
2. All believers in Christ are part of the Church.
3. God has a structure for the local congregation. There are 2 offices in the Church: Pastors and deacons.
Pastor Qualifications
His Call
1. He has a passion for following God’s call.
2. He pursuits obedience to God’s call in all he does.
3. He performs his calling as the “Under Shepherd”.
His Character
1. In his marriage. “The husband of but one wife…” (Give both interpretations.)
2. In his ministry. “…temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach”.
3. In his morals. “Not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.”
4. In his management. “He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.”
His Credibility
1. Seasoned. Not a new believer.
2. Sifted. A mature Christian.
3. Sanctified. A good reputation.
Deacon Qualification
1. The first Scriptural reference of deacons. Acts 6:1-4
2. The function. Servants.
3. The qualifications. (Very similar to the Pastor’s qualification.)
Widows, Elders, And Slaves
1. Respect. 1 Timothy 5:3-16
2. Widows that qualify for help. 1 Timothy 5:17-22
3. Handling of full time minister. 1 Timothy 6:1-2
4. How Christian slaves should work for their owners.
