1 John 5:1-6

New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Faith Conquers the World

5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who is it who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

1. Who are those Conquerors?

• The Movie, “Napoleon” says, “He came from nothing. He conquered everything.”

• Napoleon, and his army would overrun nearly all of continental Europe. By 1812, his empire stretched from Spain on the west to Poland and Austria on the east.

• Napoleon wanted to conquer Russia but it was said, “The Russians like to say it was “General Winter” who defeated him”

• Europe thought Napoleon was a man who could conquer the world.

2. Folk who conquer are considered to be or thought of as like Napoleon strong, leadership qualities, fierce, aggressive, courageous and determined

• The writer of the first letter of John says. “Who is it that conquers the world,” he declares, “but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

• During graduations you may hear messages or speeches to the graduates that Their message often boils down to, “If you just believe in yourself, you, too, can conquer the world.”

• The author of 1 John has in mind that the conquers are,. “Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God?” it was not the emperor of Rome. It was not Napoleon

• The ones who conquer are those that believe.

3. Those that believe can conquer, believe in Jesus Christ the Great Prophet Acts says, “A great prophet has risen up among us!” and “God has visited His people!”

• Jesus is the Great Prophet who conquers and if we Believe enough I believe with God all things are possible.

• If a conquer believes enough Jesus says, “I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

• If conquers believe enough like the blind man Jesus said, Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

• If conquers believe enough Peter believed He said to the beggar, Silver and Gold have I none, but such as I have in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth , rise up and walk and immediately the man rose stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.

4. Jesus we believe is Our conqueror the one who conquered sin. Jesus was the only sinless one listen to the scriptures

• Peter says 1 Peter 2:22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;

Hebrews 4:15For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

1 John 3:5You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.

• Hebrews identifies Jesus as “high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (6:20).

• Melchizedek was Hebrews 7: king of Salem and priest of God Most High, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever (Jesus)

• Jesus goes to the cross, Jesus entered holy of holies sacrificed himself for our atonement,

• When, Jesus breathed his last, the veil of the temple was torn in two. No longer do we who are his followers need the offices of a priest to make sacrifices for us. Christ, our great high priest, has already done everything needful.

5. Those born of God conquer, those born of God conquer by faith, those that conquer are those who believe, The conqueror is Jesus of Nazareth
